Art courses may be counted toward the major in fine and performing arts or as elective credit. A $71 course fee does not include personal art supplies. Studio art courses may not be audited or taken pass/no credit (P/N). Art courses do not satisfy distribution requirements.

ART 125-CN
Basic Drawing

This introductory course covers the basic concepts, techniques, materials, and processes of drawing. Students draw primarily from observation and are encouraged to take skills learned from in-class exercises and combine them with individual ideas and interests to complete a series of required homework projects. Students are also be expected to keep a sketchbook. Throughout the course, slide lectures introduce students to the history of drawing and contemporary drawing practices in order to illustrate a variety of approaches to drawing. Enrollment is limited to 18. A $74 lab fee is due at registration.

ART 150-CN
Basic Photography

Introduction to photographic equipment, materials, and processes. Extensive darkroom instruction emphasizing high-quality black-and-white printing and creative darkroom control. Classroom discussion and lectures exploring the aesthetics of camera vision. No previous studio experience necessary. Bring camera (35-mm operable with automatic settings off) and one roll of Tri-X black-and-white 36-exposure film to first class. Enrollment is limited to 12. A $74 lab fee is due at registration.

ART 252-CN
Color Photography

This course explores techniques and issues of contemporary color photographic processes with emphasis on archival digital printing. Familiarity with fundamental photographic processes is assumed and topics discussed build on critical and technical skills developed in ART 150 Basic Photography. Class time is divided between demonstrations of techniques and processes, group discussions, and one-on-one discussions with the instructor about works in progress. Enrollment is limited to 12. Prerequisites: ART 150 Basic Photography or permission of instructor. A $74 lab fee is due at registration.

ART 390-CN
Special Topics in Art: Digital Video Post-Production

Using Final Cut Pro, students learn the theory and practice of video post-production, including editing, audio mixing and basic compositing and effects. Students participate in a series of in-class exercises as well as three self-directed projects which involve either their own footage or archival/found material (which can be downloaded from the internet).
