SPANISH 101-A
Elementary Spanish I

This course is part one of a three-quarter sequence based on the communicative method. Emphasis on vocabulary-building, listening comprehension, speaking and grammar through context. Students will also watch, on a weekly basis, a video program called "Caminos del jaguar", a mini-series designed to develop listening comprehension skills. The course goals are: gaining a basic understanding of cultural issues that define Spanish-speaking countries; developing basic oral skills to describe people and things; describing actions in the present and talk about daily routines; talking about likes and dislikes in real-life situations; reading about current events and cultural topics in Spanish-speaking countries; writing basic sentences, paragraphs and compositions in Spanish. Prerequisite: Only students who have never taken Spanish before should enroll in this course. Students with previous Spanish experience (high school or college, studied abroad, etc), should enroll in SPANISH 102. Students with questions prior to registering should contact the instructor.

This course is part two of a three-quarter sequence based on the communicative method. Emphasis on vocabulary-building, listening comprehension, speaking and grammar through context. Students will also watch, on a weekly basis, a video program called "Caminos del jaguar", a mini-series designed to develop listening comprehension skills.The course goals are: developing basic oral skills to order food in a restaurant, checking in a hotel, or shopping in a store; indicating likes and dislikes; narrating events in the past; giving instructions and making requests, and asking for and giving directions; developing basic vocabulary related to professions, family members, and leisure activities; reading about current events and cultural topics in Spanish-speaking countries; writing paragraphs and compositions on basic topics in Spanish. Prerequisite: Only students who have never taken Spanish before should enroll in this course. Students with previous Spanish experience (high school or college, studied abroad, etc), should enroll in SPANISH 102. Students with questions prior to registering should contact the instructor.

This course is part three of a three-quarter sequence based on the communicative method. Emphasis on vocabulary-building, listening comprehension, speaking and grammar through context. Students will also watch, on a weekly basis, a video program called "Caminos del jaguar", a mini-series designed to develop listening comprehension skills. The course goals are: gaining a basic understanding of cultural issues that define Spanish-speaking countries; reviewing and developing basic oral skills regarding the following communicative functions: narrating events in the past; making comparisons; expressing requests, emotions, doubt, or certainty; giving instructions and making requests (formally & informally), and, if time allows it, expressing plans/ predictions in the future; developing basic vocabulary related to shopping, stores, clothes, health and well-being and technology; reading about current events in Spanish newspapers, and about cultural topics in Spanish-speaking countries; writing compositions; giving brief presentations. Prerequisite: Only students who have never taken Spanish before should enroll in this course. Students with previous Spanish experience (high school or college, studied abroad, etc), should enroll in SPANISH 102. Students with questions prior to registering should contact the instructor.

Intermediate Spanish I

This is an intermediate level course in Spanish (continuation of SPANISH 101). It is intended for those students who wish to attain a considerable level of proficiency in the language. Equal emphasis is given to the spoken and written word through a wide variety of assignments and activities which reinforce reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. ˇAVANCE! INTERMEDIATE SPANISH will be used for grammar review and exciting readings used as topics of conversation. AVANCE! CUADERNO DE PRÁCTICA will provide additional grammar practice for students. Compositions and oral presentations will be assigned on a variety of timely subjects. Readings, discussions, intermediate grammar and listening exercises provide the central features of this course. SPANISH 101-A,B,C or equivalent.
