Faculty and Teaching Responsibilities
The faculty of the School of Continuing Studies has the dual
responsibility of participation in the transmission of accumulated
wisdom and knowledge and participating in the discovery of
new knowledge. The roles are mutually interactive: teaching
and learning sustain each other. Faculty should continuously
structure their courses from year to year to maximize this
interaction and maintain the instruction and sharing of current
and new information as it changes.
Faculty members must make available to students and the
School of Continuing Studies a written description (syllabus)
of each course they will teach. Faculty are also expected
to submit a course description before the start of each
term. All material must be submitted by email.
Faculty members are responsible for ordering books and
other required materials for teaching in advance of class,
meeting classes at scheduled times, and evaluating students’ work,
including providing adequate and timely feedback to students
and submitting grades by the stated deadlines. Faculty
members are responsible for informing students in their
classes of the criteria and methods to be used in determining
final course grades. Faculty should report academic or
general problems with students to the Associate Dean of
Student Services.
Faculty are encouraged to update information, such as
mailing address, email address and contact numbers, with
SCS as soon as there is a change so that our records can
remain current. To update your personal information, add
or change email addresses or add or change a mailing address,
simply send an email to
k-kelly5@northwestern.edu If illness, or any other unforeseen situation, prevents
an instructor from conducting class, the SCS office must
be contacted as soon as possible. It is the responsibility
of the instructor to contact all students and notify them
of cancelled classes. If an instructor knows they will
be unable to conduct class a day or more prior to meeting,
they are responsible for setting a make-up date for the
class, or for recruiting and compensating a qualified substitute,
in cooperation with the appropriate SCS academic director.
If an emergency arises and the instructor is unable to
contact SCS in advance of class, it is their responsibility
to call the SCS office as soon as possible.
Faculty members are expected to be available to assist
students outside of class time whether via office hours,
email, and phone, or offer students an alternative, accessible
method for communicating outside class. All SCS faculty
are required to maintain an active Northwestern University
email account during the term in which they are teaching.
Graded examinations and papers should be provided for
student inspection and discussion with the instructor.
The faculty member is responsible for all work carried
out by teaching assistants. During term, tests and quizzes
should be graded and returned to students within a reasonable
time. Faculty are required to keep student papers, exams,
etc. at least six months after the end of the term. If
necessary, these may be kept on file at the School of Continuing
Studies. Faculty are required to have students evaluate
the course using course/teacher evaluations (CTECs).
