Library Programs & Services
SCS faculty may use any of Northwestern University's libraries,
including, on the Evanston campus, the Main Library, the
Seely G. Mudd Library for Science and Engineering, the
Geology Library, the Mathematics Library, the Music Library,
the Transportation Library, and the United Library. The
libraries on the Chicago campus include the Joseph Schaffner
Library, the Galter Health Sciences Library, and the Law
Library. The WildCARD serves as a library card and is needed
to check out library materials. A WildCARD must be presented
for admittance at Galter Health Sciences Library on Saturday
and Sunday, and at the Main Library after 5 p.m. Monday
through Friday, after noon on Saturday, and all day on
Sunday.
For additional information on the libraries, contact Schaffner
Library at (312) 503-8422 or visit its website;
visit the Main
Library's web site.
The Schaffner Library has a librarian dedicated to SCS
and is glad to work with faculty to provide library instruction
and help for research papers and presentations, and assist
with reserve materials. Contact Qiana Johnson, reference
and instruction librarian, at q-johnson@northwestern.edu
or (312) 503-6617.
Reserve
Books (both personal copies and those owned by the Library)
and photocopied materials may be placed on reserve at
the Schaffner Library for Chicago campus courses and
at the Reserve Room of the Main Library for Evanston
campus courses. Photocopied materials should comply with
copyright restrictions.
Schaffner Library in Wieboldt Hall and University Library
on the Evanston campus regularly accept the following items
for reserve: A library copy of a book, including books
from the branch libraries. Your own personal copy of a
book. (Please write your full name inside of the book in
order to insure its prompt return.) A photocopy of a single
chapter from a book, or of an article from a journal. A
full source citation must be presented, including copies
of the title page and the copyright page. Due to clear
copyright restrictions, course packs may not be placed
on reserve.
To allow sufficient time for acquiring and processing
materials, please submit the reserve list for each course
at least three weeks before the start of the class. If
new books or additional copies of books need to be ordered,
the request should be submitted eight to ten weeks before
the start of the class. Special arrangements must be made
with the Reserve Room staff to place multiple copies of
photocopied materials on reserve. All faculty-supplied
photocopies must include a complete citation for the work
from which the copy was made, including a photocopy of
the source's title page and copyright page. Photocopied
materials will be stamped with the required warning notice
of copyright. For reserve information at all Northwestern
libraries visit www.library.northwestern.edu/courses/facind.html.
As a complement to traditional reserve, the library's
Electronic Reserve System makes course materials accessible
to remote users via the World Wide Web. Using a networked
computer, students can access electronic reserve materials
without coming to the library. Course materials are prepared
for Electronic Reserve in a number of ways; printed materials
can be scanned, and materials already in electronic format
can be easily converted. Contact e-reserve@northwestern.edu
for more information.
For further information, call Schaffner Library ((312)
