Kaplan Center for the Humanities
Of particular interest to MALS and MALit students are events and lectures at the Kaplan Center for the Humanities. The center fosters development of a broad, innovative humanities culture at Northwestern and promotes an interdisciplinary conversation among humanists. A lecture series featuring two or three distinguished speakers from outside Northwestern to address a chosen theme and meet with students is a highlight of each quarter.

Libraries
One of the most enticing attractions of our graduate program is the unlimited access to the University’s extensive library system. The system includes a total of seven libraries on the Evanston and Chicago campuses, with total holdings of 4.2 million volumes. The library system includes video theaters, multimedia centers, and computer labs. As well as offering courses and seminars focusing on academic research, our programs enable students to take tours and library workshops on conducting research.

Career Development
Graduate students at Northwestern are encouraged to explore many avenues to find careers that maximize their talents. University Career Services, the Northwestern Alumni Association, and online career management websites such as Vault and WetFeet are just some of the tools offered by Northwestern to assist graduate students with career decisions. Check the SCS grad website periodically and be sure to consistently check your email for career workshop and lecture announcements. For more information and resources, visit: www.scs.northwestern.edu/student/career_services.cfm

Other opportunities for professional development include programs such as Preparing Future Faculty, a Graduate School program that augments students’ disciplinary training with preparation in the issues and responsibilities that shape professional life in the academy, and Beyond Books, which focuses on preparation and search for careers both within and outside academia.

Cultural and Recreational Resources
Resources available to graduate students include the Mary and Leigh Block Museum of Art, a multifaceted museum committed to providing excellence in the visual arts; fitness and recreation programs at the Henry Crown Sports Pavilion, Patten Gymnasium, and Norris Aquatics Center; and performing ensembles, music and theater productions, faculty recitals, music festivals, and professional guest artists at Pick-Staiger Concert Hall.
Alumni Opportunities

The SCS Alumni Board is a constituent member of the NU Alumni Association. Every SCS graduate is a member of both associations. The mission of the SCS Alumni Board is to promote the growth and excellence of SCS services to its students and alumni through programs, fundraisers, receptions, involvement in a variety of committees and events, and various publications.
