To promote advancement in computer science careers, the MSIS program is designed to build skills that translate into success at the workplace. It is suited for people now working in the field, as well as for those interested in changing professions. The program combines the study of information systems methodologies — software processes, engineering, telecommunications, database and internet technologies, information systems security, information systems management and software project management and development — with content delivery over data networks. It is a flexible program that recognizes the need to accommodate busy schedules.

The MSIS program focuses on the application and implementation of information technology, skills highly prized by employers. The instruction emphasizes the best practices in the field, along with evolving standards, which keep students abreast of trends in this rapidly changing field.

Distinct from traditional computer science programs, MSIS puts emphasis on the development and management of software projects existing in the workplace. This real-world expertise enables students to stand out on the job. Graduates of the program typically find positions as quality assurance analysts, project managers, database administrators, software engineers, systems analysts, business analysts, IT service desk managers, IT relationship managers, IT service managers, IT service continuity managers, IT supplier managers, information security managers, technology security analysts and disaster recovery analysts and application developers. Professionals with these skills build careers at large and midsize corporations, start-up companies, nonprofits and government agencies.

To concentrate on a specialty, students may select an optional area that focuses on particular academic or professional interests. Core and specialization courses emphasize modern distributed applications, including design and implementation, evaluation, underlying enabling technologies, theoretical models and the networks through which computer-based technologies travel.

The MSIS degree can be earned by studying online or on campus, or by combining online and on-campus courses.
