Bill Savage Takes on Adventuresses

The evening of January 18, Dr. Bill Savage — instructor in SCS’s MALit program and the Weinberg College English department — delivered the lecture “Adventuresses: Women in Public, Vice, and Art from the 1893 World’s Fair to the Jazz Age”. Throughout the lecture, he treated SCS students and alumni to snippets of the research he recently conducted for the newly annotated edition of Chicago by Day and Night: The Pleasure Seeker’s Guide to the Paris of America, slated to be released this spring. He walked the audience through the different pleasures the travel guide recounts, from respectable must-sees to the more clandestine of activities available to travelers in town for the 1893 World’s Fair and thereafter. He then paid particular attention to the chapter dedicated to adventuresses and the many social, historical and cultural suppositions one could infer via the portrayal of these “dangerous females”. After the lecture, students and alumni stayed to enjoy a reception that followed. To view photographs from the evening, please click here.
This lecture was the first in a set of lectures presented by SCS Graduate Programs this year. Friday, March 8, Dr. Michael Kramer (instructor for SCS’s MALS program and WCAS’s Dept. of History) will present the next lecture, entitled, “The Republic of Rock: Music and Citizenship in the Sixties Counterculture”.
