SCS Alum Publishes New Book

Weighing Anchors: A Veteran TV Newswriter Critiques the Top Network Anchors

Congratulations to SCS alum Mervin Block on the publication of his new book Weighing Anchors: A Veteran TV Newswriter Critiques the Top Network Anchors. In his new publication, the veteran newsman who also holds two degrees from Northwestern explores the distortions, deceptions, abuses and mishaps in broadcast writing and reporting.  “This book will cause news consumers to question the anchors,” Block says. “The mistakes they make shouldn’t happen and Weighing Anchors holds them accountable.”

Mervin Block received his bachelor’s degree from Northwestern University School of Continuing Studies in 1955 and went on to receive his master’s degree from Medill School of Journalism. Block is a broadcast writing coach and author of Writing Broadcast News Shorter, Sharper, Stronger: A Professional Handbook, Rewriting Network News: Wordwatching Tips from 345 TV and Radio Scripts and Writing News for TV and Radio: The New Way to Learn Broadcast Newswriting.  He has worked with all three major TV networks and written for some of the biggest names in the industry including Walter Cronkite, Tom Brokaw, Dan Rather, Diane Sawyer and Mike Wallace. Block was a recipient of an NAA Alumni Merit Award in 2009.
