Message from the Director

Welcome to the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Northwestern's School of Continuing Studies, where members enjoy a feast of peer-learning opportunities and a vital connection to a world-class University. Moreover, added benefits are gained in the process - including the personal reward of being a part of a supportive community who share a passion for learning.

America's concept of retirement is on the brink of a sea change. There is a thirty-year span between the end of career (mid-life) and the onset of old age. This 2nd Act or 3rd Age presents an opportunity to explore interests that have been set aside for a career, such as writing, poetry, or the studies of history and science. According to medical research, intellectual stimulation and social interaction are essential to a great 2nd Act.

A new field called creative aging explores the vital relationship between creative expression and quality of life of older adults. The creative process itself and the act of lifelong education are to be celebrated and embraced! Studies find that nurturing our relationships, talents, and hobbies - and participating in meaningful engagement - provide as much assistance in successful aging as being diligent about diet and exercise.

Just as physical exercise strengthens the heart, mental exercise protects the brain. Membership in OLLI promotes social well being and a regenerated sense of self-esteem as well as cerebral stimulation. In addition to participation in a potpourri of cooperative study groups, OLLI members engage in social activities such as "Poetry and Pizzas," field trips to points of interest in Chicago and Evanston (and environs), concerts, creative outlets such as our arts Journal - and parties just for the fun of it!

I am glad you have discovered our OLLI program. Click here to take a look at our catalog. This fall, for the first time, OLLI is offering a choice of four membership options designed to correspond to your particular lifestyle. We would so enjoy having you engaged with us.
