Custom Post-baccalaureate Certificates
At Northwestern University's School of Continuing Studies, you have the opportunity to build your own custom certificate program. If you have a particular interest that is not reflected in our current collection of certificate offerings, you may propose a group of related courses and request that you be granted a certificate upon completion of those courses.
For example, you might want to select and combine courses from existing certificates to meet your own professional needs. Students interested in international marketing, for instance, might choose courses from Global Leadership and Strategic Marketing to create their own International Marketing certificate.
To gain approval for your certificate program, you will need to submit a proposal, which includes a list of four to eight SCS undergraduate courses, a rationale for your program of study, and an explanation of your goals. The certificate that you receive upon completion will list the approved title of your custom program.
Steps for Custom Post-baccalaureate Certificate Approval
- Identify the courses you wish to include in your program - see current course listings - to include with your proposal, which also details your rationale and goals for the course of study.
- Apply for approval by completing the Student Affairs Online Petition
- Submit the completed form and proposal to the Assistant Dean of Undergraduate and Post-baccalaureate Programs, Wieboldt Hall, 6th Floor, Chicago, IL 60611
Many students find it helpful to first meet with an academic adviser to think through their options. If you would like to do so, you can set up an appointment by calling 312-503-4682.
