Creative Writing: Creative Nonfiction
Creative nonfiction is a relatively new category of writing
that elevates “facts” to art by using the tools
of creative writing. Examples range from The New Yorker magazine,
to collections such as The Best American Essays,
to web journals such as www.creativenonfiction.org.
The story and the skills of writing are equal partners in
creative nonfiction, and
the successful writer of such texts will need to be well-read
and invested in learning the finer points of the writer's
craft.
In this program, developing writers move through a sequence
of workshop-based courses exploring various forms and techniques
of nonfiction and the development of a personal voice.
This program is appropriate for those who have a serious
interest
in such writing, whether they are seeking publication or
entrance to competitive graduate writing programs. Courses
are taught by instructors who are published authors. Evening courses at the School of Continuing Studies are offered on Northwestern's Evanston and Chicago campuses.
