To successfully select, install, and maintain landscape plants, it is important to have a clear understanding of plant physiology. Gaining insight into the functional aspects of plant growth will increase your diagnostic abilities and inform future maintenance decisions. In this class, the regulation of plant development, nutrition, water use, and transport of food will be discussed. Students will gain an understanding of how a plant grows and functions; learn the structural elements of a plant that enables its growth; develop an ability to diagnose stress factors; and study effective maintenance plans. IAA CEU's 8 credit hours; INA CEU's 2 credit hours; ILCA-CT credit available.

Managing Plants in the Environment HORT 364-0
The environmental setting of the landscape design has a dominant influence on the growth and development of the planting material. Prior to the development of a design, designers will review and understand the constraints and opportunities of their setting. The designer will have options to adjust of maintain aspects of the setting. Students will be introduced to various site review methods and techniques to adjust the setting. Planting will be reviewed to undestand matching habitat characteristics to those of the materials. Additional discussions will include students understanding different microclimates, understanding plant's response to conditions, and maintaining a design over time. IAA CEU's 24 credit hours; INA CEU's 2 credit hours; APLD CEU's 10 credit hours; ILCA-CLT credit available.
Have you ever composed a landscape design only to have your ideas lost within your presentation drawings? Curious how to produce effective plan symbols or choose the right colors when developing a rendering? Tom Selinger will introduce drawing methods to help you see, think and communicate with drawings that will be a pleasure to read. Drafting principles, lettering, plan graphics, color excitement and quick perspectives will all be introduced through lectures and handouts. Come feel "the thrill of vanquishing a monster-sized fire-breathing design problem with nothing more than a stick"--Marty Neumeier

Effective Design with Plants & Materials LAND_DM 363-0
Students will: Study the influence of selected materials on the completed landscape. Learn a variety of construction methods and materials. Gain skills in measuring and effectively designing to meet elevation changes. Incorporate new skills into a design project. As you move through a landscape, the materials influence you both functionally and aesthetically. Lawns or pavement invite a walk, while groundcovers, perennials, or fences and walls define the edges, shrubs and trees form the walls and ceilings. Design projects will focus on accurate interpretation of site conditions and accepted installation and construction methods. The course's emphasis on design will assist students in using plants and constructed elements to meet both functional requirements and design goals. IAA CEU's 5 credit hours; INA CEU's 2 credit hours; ILCA-CLT credit available.

Sustainable Landscape Design LAND_DM 370-0
This course will provide students with a fundamental understanding of design concepts in landscape sustainability and conservation. The class will begin with an introduction into the history and development of sustainable horticulture and move on to discuss future environmental implications of sustainable practices. Students will learn to create functional "green" spaces by incorporating rooftop gardens, rain barrels and composts into their design presentations. Students will also learn to integrate environmentally-friendly materials into designs to create decks and pergolas, reduce reflected light, and harness sun and wind energy in an aesthetically appealing way. The course includes two hands-on design workshops highlighting these practices.
