Museum Studies

Museum Origins & Missions
MUSEUM 370-0

IN CLASS: This course explores the diverse origins of the major types of museums, and contemporary issues and ethical challenges facing those museums today. How the primary public mission is established and interpreted and an overview of museum organization is included. Planning for exhibitions, community inclusion, and diversity are profiled. In-class students are encouraged to visit Chicago Museums under discussion, and may take field trips during class time.

ONLINE: This course explores the diverse origins of the major types of museums, and contemporary issues and ethical challenges facing those museums today. How the primary public mission is established and interpreted and an overview of museum organization is included. Planning for exhibitions, community inclusion, and diversity are profiled. The online section of the course will expand to explore various national and international types of museums. Online students will be encouraged to visit subject-appropriate museum sites in their own area.

Successful Museum Management
MUSEUM 371-0

This course explores the organization, governance and management of museums. The course considers the role of the board of directors, the museum president, and staff and volunteers. The course next considers principles and practices for planning asset acquisition, collections management, and exhibits, including the growing role of technology. Contemporary issues and challenges, such as financing future acquisitions, shrinking public funding and competition for leisure time, are discussed.

Learning in Museums
MUSEUM 372-0

This course studies theories and practices of education and learning in museums and examines the principal activities in planning and implementing educational experiences for museum visitors. Included are the considerations of the roles of museum educators and the principles of informal learning. Strategies to assess learning interests for potential audiences and to include technology in museum learning are presented. All types of educational opportunities and experiences offered by museums are examined and evaluated. Students participate in several instructor-led field trips to Chicago museums during class time. Online students will analyze the learning opportunities and experiences offered by museums in their own area.

The Exhibit from Concept to Opening and Beyond
MUSEUM 373-0

This two-day course presents an in-depth study of the components that make a successful museum exhibition, whether permanent or temporary. Topics covered will include: concept, research, conservation, publications, design, lighting, budget, loans, advertising, sponsorship, education, and visitor satisfaction. Speakers representing a range of specialists in the field will provide commentary. This course may be taken as a supplement to Northwestern University's Museum Studies Certificate Program or as a stand-alone experience for museum professionals and those who are interested in furthering their knowledge of the exhibit process.
