Managing Teams: Dealing with Distance, Cultures, and Organizational Challenges
PROJ_PMI 300-0

Today's teams are no longer comprised of people from one department sitting next to each other, working together, and reporting to the same manager. Instead, they consist of people from several departments, multiple time zones and countries, and a variety of companies. As today's managers face this shifting team landscape, it is vital that they understand how to build and manage an effective team, using the proper techniques for communication, collaboration, and motivation. They must be able to overcome challenges in building trust and fellowship, navigating complex dynamics and politics, and dealing with multi-layered logistics. Managers need to build and foster high performing teams that do not have the luxury of a shared physical and cultural space, yet are expected to respond rapidly to the demands of today's business world.

This class is intended for any managers of project or operational teams, especially those that have remote or virtual team members. These managers will enhance their team management skills by learning techniques, best practices, and tools for:

· Building and fostering effective teams
· Overcoming common logistical barriers
· Establishing effective collaboration and communication patterns
· Incorporating vendors into the team structure
· Reconciling cultural differences and resolving conflicts
· Establishing authority and defining escalation patterns
· Building a cohesive, high-performing team
· Delivering valued results through various team structures

Portfolio Management and Project Management Office
PROJ_PMI 302-0

Most companies manage their projects as individual investments with independent budgets and independent schedules, approving and funding them based on their individual merits. This can be effective when an organization has a number of small projects. As the size, scope or complexity of projects increase, organizations should analyze projects' characteristics to determine how they affect a company performance. Then, as the total number of projects grows, organizations should assess the set of prospective projects as a portfolio. By analyzing projects as a portfolio, each project can be mapped against all of the other projects based on criteria that are relevant to your company and determine an appropriate balance of risk and return for the portfolio. A portfolio approach also helps to highlight potential competition among projects over shared resources. The program is designed to help you develop the skills required to define your portfolios, develop the right portfolio management approach for your company and how to leverage a Project Management Office to track the execution of your plan and the performance of your portfolios. Each program participant will gain practical experience in defining the portfolio criteria, evaluating project against most commonly used criteria such as ROI, EBITDA, risks, and strategic alignment, managing portfolio risks, defining the right structure and approach based on your company culture, gaining and maintaining support for your Portfolios Management approach, and properly measuring and reporting the performance of your portfolios. The program is also aligned with PMI Standard for Portfolio Management and OPM3 Maturity Model framework.
