Information Systems Project Management (ISPM) Professional Development Program

In the current business environment, Information Systems professionals have become more than technical experts. Today, they are leaders and managers. Indeed, one of the major challenges they face is managing information systems projects that are critical to their business organizations. The Information Systems Project Management Certificate Program helps bridge information technology with managerial strategy.   ®

Earning the Information Systems Project Management Certificate requires completion of both an introductory and an advanced course. These two courses may be taken independent of the certificate, and professionals with significant project management experience may wish to enroll directly in the advanced course.

Program Audience

  • Information systems professionals who implement technology-oriented solutions
  • Professionals looking to satisfy the 35 hour project management education requirement for the Project Management Institute's Project Management Professional (PMP) exam
  • PMPs looking to fulfill the 60 hour project management education requirement for continuing education
  • Career changers

Learning Goals

Introduction to IS Project Management is a guide to the project management body of knowledge. The course explores project management terms, concepts, techniques, and tools to ensure that aspects of an IS project are organized and managed properly. Integration, scope, time, cost, quality, human resources, communication, risk, and procurement management are also discussed. This course qualifies for 36 PDUs and contains PMBOK® Guide Third Edition updates.

In Advanced IS Project Management, participants plan, organize staff, manage, and produce each of the phases of key work projects. They learn the best practices in information systems management. Students also learn how to use project management software. This course qualifies for 30 PDUs and contains PMBOK® Guide Third Edition updates.

SCS is a Registered Provider for the Project Management Institute (PMI), the world's foremost advocate for the project management profession. The SCS program is organized into an Introductory and an Advanced ISPM course. After completing both courses, students will be able to:

  • Understand and evaluate risks and issues surrounding information systems projects
  • Acquire basic and more advanced techniques and concepts associated with project management, as how to develop their own
  • Integrate management techniques in a Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC)
  • Understand the diverse organizational and managerial aspects of information systems projects
  • Create management plans for technology projects
  • Complete projects on schedule and within budget while meeting performance and quality objectives.

Instruction follows the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) approach, a term used in the industry to describe a collection of accepted practices and information areas. After the first course, students are eligible to take the Project Management Profession (PMP) Certification exam, which formally recognizes professional expertise.

Besides lectures, students take part in classroom discussions, small-group work, and a unique information system project simulation exercise that mirrors a real-life project cycle. Students who complete the 66 hours of total course work will be awarded a Certificate of Completion from Northwestern University's School of Continuing Studies.

Additional Project Management courses offering targeted training to enhance project manager performance in communication, team building, analysis, and preparation to become a Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM®) may be found on the Project Management webpage.
