Program Overview:

Project Management

The School of Continuing Studies project management certificate program has been designed to offer students real-world learning experiences to increase their project management knowledge. Students choose a track of study based on their educational and professional needs and whether or not they plan to sit for the PMP® exam.  The program also has multiple electives so that students can customize their learning and we also offer online courses as well.

Program Goals

  • Communicate the value of project management
  • Establish the structure for a successful project
  • Assemble, motivate and lead the project team
  • Ensure the project scope delivers the expected business value and desired outcome
  • Implement the proper mechanisms to prevent, minimize and respond to risks
  • Develop and use various mechanism to communicate project information
  • Ensure the project is completed per the agreed-upon project standards, budget and schedule

In Project Management for Professionals students will also learn how to explain concepts expected by the PMP® exam

    SCS is a Global Provider for the Project Management Institute (PMI), the world's foremost advocate for the project management profession. All of the core courses as well as all electives are eligible for professional development units (PDUs) from PMI®.

    Project Management Certificate Requirements

    To earn a certificate of completion from Northwestern University, students must complete one required course and two electives.  

    Project Management for Professionals Track

    Choose Project Management for Professionals if you have experience in project management and you want to take the PMP ® exam.

    • Course length: 35 hours 
    • Offered in Fall, Winter, Spring, Summer
    • Offered in-person in Chicago's Loop and Online over 11 weeks

    Choose 2 electives to earn a certificate from Northwestern University. These electives are offered on a rotating basis. Check the course schedule for currently scheduled offerings. Courses may meet for 2 to 3 full days, or once a week at night for several weeks.


    To earn a certificate from Project Management Institute, such as PMP®, you must sit for their exam and meet their eligibility criteria.

    Project Management for Practitioners Track

    Choose Project Management for Practitioners if you are a a new project manager, a career changer or just want hands-on training .

    • Course length: 24 hours
    • Offered in Fall, Winter, Spring, Summer
    • Offered in-person in Chicago's Loop weekdays or Saturdays

    Choose 2 electives to earn a certificate from Northwestern University. These electives are offered on a rotating basis. Check the course schedule for currently scheduled offerings. Courses may meet for 2 to 3 full days, or once a week at night for several weeks.

    Project Management for Professionals Starts Online in January 2014

    We are pleased to begin offering Project Management for Professionals online. This takes the best elements of our in-person class and moves them online so that students can take the 35-hour PMP® training program from any location in the world. Some highlights of the course include:

    • 11-weeks in length
    • Time commitment of 5–7 hours per week
    • Four (4) “live” online sessions that are optional and recorded (7–8pm Central Time on Mondays)
    • Group exercises to develop your virtual team leadership abilities which you submit online
    • Based on our highly popular in-person course
