Advising and Student Affairs
Academic Advising
The SCS Student Services team recognizes that our students
have busy lives. With this in mind, in addition to in-person
advising, phone and e-mail advising appointments are available.
Before making an appointment, we
encourage you to check the FAQ list. Please review the
additional guidelines listed within this website to help you
determine whether or not a phone or e-mail appointments would
be most helpful for you.
Advisers can assist students in planning their academic program
and choosing courses, provide information about SCS, university
academic policies and degree/certificate requirements, and
refer students to the appropriate campus resources for tutoring,
career planning, study skills development, counseling, or
other services which will promote academic success. Please
call 847-491-5612 or 312/503-6950 to schedule an appointment
with an adviser.

SCS Undergraduate
Email Advising
Many continuing SCS students utilize email for advising.
The Student Services team would like to supply some recommended
guidelines in order to better serve you.
The SCS website is rich in detail and outlines student policies
and procedures. However, if you cannot find the answer to
your question, you may email advisors or send a message to
talktoscs@northwestern.edu.
- Do not provide your social security number. This is very
important information that should be guarded.
- Do provide us with your full name, student status, (Pre-admitted,
continuing admitted, transfer-admitted or student-at large)
major or professional development program name and one other
piece of identifying information (especially if you have
a common name)such as date of birth. This information will
help us correctly identify your information and accurately
answer your question.
- Student records are protected by the Family Education
Rights and Privacy Act. We will not send information regarding
your personal student record (such as grades you have received)
via email. Additionally, we cannot email spouses, employers
or other family/friends with your personal information.
- Advising via email is intended for 1 or 2 short questions.
Please be specific and brief. Should you have more complex
or detailed questions (or you are a student entering SCS
for the first time), we encourage you to make a phone or
in-person -advising appointment at either our Chicago or
Evanston locations. To request an appointment, call 847-491-5612
or 312/503-6950.
- Email is checked daily, so we will make every attempt
to answer your questions as soon as possible. Please be
aware that high registration periods may delay a response.
Additionally, if an answer requires more in-depth research,
that may also cause a delay in response time.
Undergraduate Advisors
Telephone Advising
Often, a student may have only a few questions he/she needs
to ask, but they are very specific to his/her situation. Or
a student may be thinking about transferring to SCS from an
out of state location. Perhaps the lunch hour is a good time
to talk but a student works far from campus. A telephone appointment
with an advisor may be the best solution. Advisors typically
contact the student at an assigned time (we pick up the phone
tab that way!) to discuss concersn and questions a student
may have about SCS.
To make the most of your appointment, there are a few things
you may do to prepare for this appointment.
- Do be prepared to contact us and supply us with your
name, student id number, phone number, address and major
area of concentration.
- Have 2 or 3 questions ready to ask your advisor.
- If you do not already have one, you may want to request
a catalog in ample time to review it.
- Additionally, if you are a continuing student, you should
have a copy of your credit evaluation and a current transcript
with you. You may print one directly from Caesar.
- New students should plan on speaking with an advisor for
45 minutes.
- Continuing students may only need 20-30 minutes.
- Please be aware that you are protected by the Family Education
and Privacy Act (FERPA) and advisors are bound by this law
to keep the appointment to general terms.
In Person Advising
This type of advising appointment is the most popular. Students
come to one of the campus locations and meet with an advisor
in a face-to-face setting. Here are some guidelines to make
the best use of your in person appointment time.
- When making an in person appointment, students will be
asked their campus preference.
- Students should arrive 5-10 minutes before their scheduled
advising time.
- If you are a new student meeting with an advisor for the
first time, be sure to let the receptionist know, so that
we may schedule a 45-minute block.
- Continuing students may only need 20-30 minutes.
- Have 2 or 3 questions written down to ask your advisor.
- Students should bring a copy of their most current credit
evaluation and their catalog with them.
- Advisors will be happy to update credit evaluations ahead
of time. Be sure to alert the receptionist.
- New evaluations must be requested in writing to the SCS
credit evaluator located at our Chicago campus.
- In order to make the best use of time, students should
review the catalog and website before coming to their appointment.
Advisors can help clarify or explain any questions you may
have about policies or procedures at SCS.
