Multiple Course Sequences

Courses Changing from Two Semesters to Three Quarters
If you have completed any of the sequences listed below, you don't need to do anything to prepare for quarter conversion with respect to these classes. However, if you have completed only the first course of a sequence - and you intend to finish the sequence - you should do so before quarter conversion occurs, if possible. That means, you should sign up to take the course in the fall of 2004 or spring of 2005!

For example, if you took French 101-a Introductory French last year, you will probably want to finish that sequence in the 2004-2005 academic year. If you wait until quarter conversion to do so, you will need to take two additional quarter classes to complete the sequence, instead of one semester class. Of course, if you don't intend or need to finish the sequence, you do not have to do so.

  • AAL 101-a, -b Introductory Chinese will become AAL 101-A, -B, -C
  • AAL 105-a, -b Elementary Arabic will become AAL 105-A, -B, -C
  • AAL 112-a, -b Intermediate Chinese will become AAL 112-A, -B, -C
  • BIOL 210-a, -b Biology will become BIOL 210-A, -B, -C
  • CHEM 121, 122 General Chemistry will become CHEM 101-A, -B, -C
  • CHEM 210-a, -b Organic Chemistry will become CHEM 210-A, -B, -C
  • FRENCH 101-a, -b will become FRENCH 101-A, -B, -C
  • FRENCH 102-a, -b Intermediate French will become FRENCH 101-A, -B, -C
  • GERMAN 101-a, -b Introductory German will become GERMAN 101-A, -B, -C
  • MATH 214-a, -b will become Math 220 Differential Calculus of One-Variable Functions (previously 214-a), Math 224 Integral Calculus of One-Variable Functions (previously 214-b), Math 230 Differential Calculus of Multivariable Functions (previously 214-c)
  • PHYSICS 130-a, -b College Physics will become PHYSICS 130-A, -B, -C
  • PORT 101-a, -b Introductory Portuese will become PORT 101-A, -B, -C
  • SPANISH 101-a, -b will become SPANISH 101-A, -B, -C

Please note: Accelerated language classes will be offered in the evenings during Summer Session. Unfortunately, after quarter conversion, intensive language classes will not be possible during fall, winter and spring quarters. The two-year BPhil requirement can be met under the quarter system either by:

a.) completing six language courses in six terms, or
b.) completing three courses (one per term) during fall, winter and spring of one academic year, plus the equivalent of three courses taken in accelerated mode during Summer Session.

One-Semester Courses Changing to Two-Quarter Sequences
Because of content requirements, the following courses will each be split into a two-quarter sequence when SCS converts to the quarter system. If you need to take either of these courses, you may wish to do so before the quarter conversion occurs.

  • ECON 310 Intermediate Economics will become ECON 310-A, -B
  • ENGLISH 210 English Literary Traditions will become ENGLISH 210-A, -B

Courses Changing from Two Semesters to Four Quarters
Each of the introductory anthropology courses will be split into two quarter courses. This means that, after quarter conversion, students will need to take four introductory courses instead of the two currently required. If you are an anthropology major, you may wish to complete both ANTHRO 201 and 202 before the quarter conversion. Otherwise, you will need to take additional course requirements.

  • ANTHRO 201 and 202 will be replaced by ANTHRO 211, 213, 214 and 215

Two-Semester Sequences Changing to Two-Quarter Sequences (no action required)
The following sequences will not be changed as a result of quarter conversion. If you have taken one of these courses - and you intend to complete the sequence - you may do so either during the semester year of fall 2004 to spring 2005, or during the quarter system that begins in the fall of 2005.

  • *ACCT 205, 206 Basic Accounting
  • ACCT 210, 211 Intermediate Accounting
  • ENGLISH 110, 111 Composition
  • HISTORY 201-A, -B European Civilization
  • HISTORY 210-A, -B History of the U. S.

*The course numbers and titles have been changed for these courses. ACCT 205 is now ACCOUNT 204 Introduction to Financial Accounting I and ACCT 206 is now ACCOUNT 205 Introduction to Financial Accounting II

Please remember: If your program does not require the complete sequence, you do not have to take all classes in that sequence - under either the semester system or the quarter system.
