SCS Update
Dear SCS Students:
This spring is a very special one for the School of Continuing
Studies as it marks the last semester term at SCS.
From Semesters to Quarters
Beginning next fall, SCS will convert to the 10-week quarter
system. This will put SCS on the same academic calendar as
Northwestern's day school, which for our adult students will
mean more access to full-time university faculty, bookstore
hours coinciding with class times, greater accessibility to
SCS educational programs and an opportunity to offer a wider
variety of undergraduate courses. Perhaps most importantly,
the quarter system will make it possible for degree-seeking
SCS students to earn their degree more quickly. Students can
find specific information on the Quarter
Conversion website.
Student Opportunities
The student organizations and Student Services team at SCS
have a number of events and activities planned for students
during the spring semester. Some events that you can look
forward to are panels on attending medical school and law
school, workshops on maximizing academic support as an adult
student, and social mixers. I also encourage you to get involved
in leadership opportunities in SCS. The Student Advisory Board
(SAB) holds open meetings on the second Friday of each month
and the next meeting is scheduled for March 11 at 6:15 p.m.
on the Chicago campus in Wieboldt Hall, Room 809. This meeting
will include information about elections for the 2005-06 academic
year. Also, for up-to-date information on workshops, events,
and activities for SCS students be sure to check
the calendar.
New Associate Dean
I would also like to introduce our new Associate Dean of Academics,
Dr. Linda Salchenberger. Linda comes from Loyola University
Chicago's School of Business Administration, where she served
as Associate Dean. Prior to that appointment, she also served
as Loyola's Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs
and Faculty Administration. Linda brings a great deal of teaching
and administrative experience to SCS and she has a significant
background working with adult learners. Linda is also very
familiar with Northwestern University, having earned her master's
in Decision Sciences and Information Systems and her Ph.D.
in Managerial Economics and Decision Sciences from Kellogg
School of Management.
Enjoy your last semester at SCS and I look forward to seeing
many of you at the June convocation ceremonies.
Sincerely,
Thomas F. Gibbons, Dean
Northwestern University School of Continuing Studies
