Writing Requirement
The writing requirement ensures that all SCS students have the skills necessary to meet the rigorous writing demands of courses in all disciplines. Both transfer and performance-based admission students must fulfill the writing requirement through one of these two options:
Option 1: Complete an SCS English composition
course
Students may satisfy the writing requirement by successfully completing English 110, English 111, or English 205. A grade of C or higher is required in the course.
Students should decide which course is most appropriate for them, based on their previous course work and writing experience. If students are uncertain which course is appropriate, they may consult with the assistant dean or the coordinator for undergraduate programs.
Option 2: Successfully appeal the writing
requirement
Students who believe they have the writing skills and experience necessary for effective university-level research and analytical papers may appeal the SCS writing requirement. To do so, students must submit a letter of appeal and two college/university research papers written during previous studies or at SCS. Following the review of the appeal, students will receive an e-mail reporting the results, followed by a letter.
All appeal materials should be sent to:
Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Programs
Wieboldt Hall, Sixth Floor
339 East Chicago Avenue
Chicago, Illinois 60611
Appeal materials must be submitted by the following deadlines:
Fall: August 15
Winter: November 15
Spring: February 15
Summer: May 15
Suspicions of plagiarism in sample papers are fully investigated. Should any submitted materials be found to be plagiarized, your appeal will be denied and your candidacy for admission may be jeopardized. Please read the University's plagiarism policy.
