Communication Studies

14 courses (BPhil Com)

Communication studies explores the most fundamental and pervasive of human activities. The study of human communication ranges from interpersonal processes such as persuasion and relationship formation to organizational processes such as group leadership and dispute resolution. It investigates the strategies and styles of public deliberation and debate, as well as political and cultural practice involving mass media and telecommunications systems. Communication studies majors find rewarding careers in public relations, print and broadcast journalism, administration, marketing, law, politics and any field in which skillful communication is valued in leadership positions.

Curriculum:

  • COMM ST 102 Public Speaking
  • COMM ST 205 Theories of Persuasion
  • COMM ST 220 Theories of Argumentation
  • COMM ST 250 Team Leadership and Decision Making
  • COMM ST 270 Theories of Mediated Communication

9 additional courses in communication studies, communication systems, or radio/television/ film, including 6 in communication studies and at least 5 at the 300 level; no more than 2 units of COMM ST 399 Independent Study
