Academic Standing

Admitted students must maintain good academic standing. If a grade of X (an unofficial withdrawal) or F in any term is received, students must ask an adviser’s permission to continue to register. (Such grades are counted as 0.0 in the GPA.) If the cumulative GPA falls below 2.0, students will be put on academic probation and given one term to raise it to a minimum of 2.0.

Students must have at least a C average in all courses completed at Northwestern to meet the requirements for a bachelor’s degree. Courses with D grades will not count toward the major or minor and may not amount to more than one-fifth of course work. Transfer credit requires a grade of at least C.

Academic Probation and Dismissal

Students may be placed on academic probation if they do not

  • maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 in a given term
  • maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 in the major
  • demonstrate satisfactory academic progress, such as having a consistent history of withdrawals (W), unofficial withdrawals (X), incompletes (Y) or failures (F) or failing to complete at least half of the courses begun in any two consecutive semesters
  • demonstrate satisfactory academic progress, in the opinion of the Student Affairs Committee

Students may be dismissed for

  • being placed on academic probation and failing to get off probation in the next term
  • failing to demonstrate satisfactory academic progress
  • violating academic integrity
