Independent Study

Students who have been admitted to a bachelor's degree program and who wish to pursue academic interests not covered by SCS course offerings may design an independent study project. The most advanced course a student can take, independent study is comparable to a 300-level course. Eligible degree-seeking students must have completed a minimum of 22 units - at least 4 at SCS - and have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better.

The independent study project may involve in-depth research extending a topic introduced in a regular course, original research, or creative work produced under the guidance of a faculty member. Independent study applications can be downloaded here (PDF Format) and must be submitted to the Student Affairs Committee for approval at least two weeks before the start of a quarter. Required courses in the major may not be taken as independent study, and students may not register for more than one unit of independent study in a quarter. Students may enroll in a maximum of three independent study courses in a bachelor's degree program.
