Computing Resouces
Many computing facilities and services for students, faculty
and staff are coordinated and managed by Northwestern's
Information Technology (IT) division. Buildings on both Northwestern
campuses are connected via high-speed networks to the Internet.
Students may take advantage of a variety of resources, including
computing classrooms with Windows and Macintosh units and
a UNIX workstation classroom/lab. There are videoconferencing
rooms on both campuses. Many of the University's schools
and departments have specialized computer labs available for
student use.
Students may obtain a network services account through IT's
Technology Support Services. This account enables access to
e-mail, Northwestern's online library catalog, and the Web.
Call 847-491-HELP or visit www.it.northwestern.edu
to inquire about opening an account.
At the beginning of each academic year, IT's Technology Support
Services welcomes new students to Northwestern. IT has developed
a CD-ROM-based tutorial to acclimate students to the University's
electronic environment. The CDs include Northwestern Internet
software installers for multiple platforms. To accommodate
students with minimal computer experience, IT schedules classes
on computer basics.
The Information Center in Kresge Centennial Hall, 1859 Sheridan
Road on the Evanston campus, is Northwestern's primary information
resource on computing and networking. The center provides
walk-in and phone consulting on University-supported hardware,
software, operating systems, and computing facilities.
On the Chicago campus the consulting services and IT/TSS
convenience center is located in suite 600 of Abbott Hall,
710 North Lake Shore Drive. Students may obtain their password,
net ID, and software from this office.
For both the Chicago and the Evanston campuses, call 847-491-HELP
to speak with a consultant. For additional information on
Northwestern University Information Technology services, please
visit www.it.northwestern.edu/student.html.
